Christmas ATC Swap

Janet arranged for those of us in the ATC swap who wanted to do a Christmas themed ATC to exchange them at the Christmas Party.

Above are the results, a fun collection. These are the fronts of the cards and below are the backs - each positioned to the relevant front. Aren't they great?!
Thanks for the photos, Marion.
By the way, if you double click on the photo you should get an enlarged version. At least, I do on my computer, so give it a try.

The Fibres and Fabrics Christmas Party.

A most enjoyable Christmas Party was held at the Yacht Club on Wednesday, organised by Anne T. A lovely large crowd of members attended, many of whom dressed for the occasion. "N" was the theme this year and if you click on Nita's Nose below you can see a gallery of photos of many of the outfits.
Besides Nosey Nurse Nita and her Naughty arsenal of Narcissistic weapons, the proceedings were blessed by Nun, Sister Anne. We all had lots of fuN, ate well, laughed a lot and ended the year on a high Note. Next year the them will be "T" so you're forewarned and have a whole year to think about it.
Merry Christmas everyone, near and far. Hope you all have a safe, healthy and happy holiday season and that the New Year is one filled with good happenings. Thanks for visiting the blog.

Joy to the World - the Christmas Fair was great fun again.

The Christmas Fair had a very festive and happy atmosphere again this year and we had lots of fun and laughs selling our wares to a very supportive public on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. I wish I'd got you a photo of Gai's beanie, but she didn't wear it on the day I had my camera handy. I did get a lot of great photos of some of the tables, though. So click on Deb's elfen feet below to go to the album of photos.
Thanks Lyn for organising a most enjoyable and successful fair. Everybody was very happy with your arrangements. I did hear one compaint though .... some people made so much to sell that they need bigger tables please! There was a bigger variety of craft for sale then usual with more people joining in, which is really good. At this rate we might end up having to hire the Entertainment Centre! (Only joking, the CWA Hall is perfect.) I think everyone went home feeling very content with the way it all went.

Sewing for Cancer - November 26

Jessica and Fran are holding up two rugs made by the Magnetic Island ladies for locals in need.

The main work of the day was sewing turbans for people in need through Queensland Cancer.
PS: These photos were taken with my mobile phone so I apologise for the quality. Janet B.

Sad News

We were very sad to hear that one of our members, Val M, had recently passed away very unexpectedly and suddenly from a heart attack. Val was such a vibrant and enthusiastic person and very talented at whatever art craft she attempted. We'll miss you Val but won't forget you. Our deepest sympathy goes to her family.

Member's Albums to be Updated and Added

During the Christmas break I intend to update the members' albums and to add new ones so please send me any photos you'd like to include? You can keep your own album updated by making an album in Picasa (which's easy and great to use). Just send me the address and I'll link it to your name on the list of members' albums. Or if that's not your cup of tea, email me the photos at jungleburra@gmail.com and I'll fix it all up for you. I have some photos already waiting to be added - just haven't done it yet. Sorry! But I'll get there soon. Carol.

Ingham Postcard Exhibition

I forgot to take my camera to the Wednesday social morning today so, sorry no photos. But Marion has sent us a link to her album of photos taken at the exhibition of our postcards in Ingham. To take a look just click here. Don't they look great? Marion would you like to add a report of your visit to the exhibition in the comments?

Doing Well!

You'll be happy to hear that Susie M is doing very well after her heart op. Looking forward to seeing you back at Fibres in the New Year, Susie. And you'll also be very pleased to hear that Nita B is showing her characteristic obstinate determination and recovering well. We send our best wishes to you both, Susie and Nita.

Dabble-in-Dyeing Day

Dabble-in-Dyeing Day

Monday 25 January
10 am – 3 pm
Venue: Joy's home

This is not a workshop as such. There will be demonstrations on dyeing yarns, fibres and fabrics (with Earth Palette dyes) and on Shibori dyeing techniques.

There will also be a limited amount of dyes for you to try (small fee applies), if you can’t bring your own. It is a day for sharing ideas, expertise, stories and laughs, and maybe for trying something new.

Call Joy for more information and for the list of things you will need to bring on the day.

Numbers will be limited, so put your name on the list at the house, or book with Joy.

Kath's Sandwich Board Project

Kath S is making a cover to rejuvenate Fibres and Fabrics' sandwich board and has inspired volunteers to each make a letter for the project. To see some of the letters which have been completed click on the photo above. I will list the album of letters among the member's galleries to the right of this post and add photos to the collection as they come in. I've missed some already, but will ask for Kath's help to catch up. Can't wait to see the finished cover. It's going to be such an interesting reflection of our member's diverse talents.

Christmas is in the Air!

Pam W has given poor old Santa a heat rash in the rush to get Christmas under way! To see photos of some of the show and tell click Santa's posterior. We had a fun day at the Wednesday social morning ending with the Bookies Group's Christmas lunch at the West End pub which was most enjoyable. Thank you Janet for organising it so successfully. The venue was cool and quiet, the food was delicious and the company was the best! Janet has a photo of the group to post and I have this photo of her taking it!

Bookies Christmas Lunch - November 25

Our end of year lunch was held at the West End Hotel. It was a lovely meal and we were seated on our own so we could make as much noise as we liked. (And yes there is that cheeky Carol taking a photo of the photographer)

A Deserving Reward for Granma's Hard Work

Do you remember the picture of Sue's completed bear? Aren't these photos of her little grand-daughter's pleasure in the bear just so heart-warming?

Embroidery Christmas Party

On Thursday 19 November among much laughter the Embroidery Group Christmas Party was held at Jessica W.'s house. Many thanks to Jessica for once again providing the venue, mixing the punch and baking the Christmas Cake.
Christine played Santa

There is nothing like the joy of unwrapping a present.

The ornament swap this year was Christmas Stockings.

Embroidery will reconvene on Thursday 18 February 2010. Everyone is welcome. For further information please contact Arlene.

Seamstress Day

Today, Thursday, was Seamstress Day. To begin with some of us met the Ingham ladies and gentleman, (Friends of Hinchinbrook) at Umbrella Gallery for morning tea. Marion gave an artist talk about the Altered Book Project, and afterwards members of Fibres and Fabrics mingled and discussed the processes that occurred in individual books. Then we went onto the House for lunch and once again with much laughter a lot was achieved.

I learned how to sew a blind hem and Val made a pumpkin bag

Anne sewing the mother of the groom outfit for Helen

Deb made sock monkeys

Kathy worked on items for her table for the Christmas Fair

Suzanne made a lid for the urn water bucket to remind everyone that it is not to be used as a slops bucket.

And

Val, Joan, Pam and Lyn supervised

Bookies Christmas Lunch

I have booked the West End Hotel on Ingham Road for Wednesday November 25 at 1.15pm in the Beer Garden. We will order off the board and they have daily specials. Remember you don't have to be a Bookie regular to attend. Just put you name on the list on the notice board at the house or ring me and let me know...Janet B.

Patchwork - November 5

On Thursday we met for patchwork. Joan B. learned how to do Crazy Patchwork.
Christine continued with embroidery stitches on her finished square.
Barb worked on a baby quilt and Val made a pumpkin bag.
Barb and I had a lot of fun playing with Anne’s fabrics, helping her lay out a colourwash quilt for the bed of her yacht.
And that is a description of just what some of the people were doing. So lots was achieved with much fun and laughter as usual. The beginnings of a timetable was discussed for next year, and it was decided that I would teach “Quilt as you go” in February and Barb would teach a lighthouse block in March. Janet B.

Lots to Share and Show

The drop of rain which fell early this morning seemed to bring a good crowd out to the Wednesday social morning and there's was a lot to share and show at the meeting, some of it quite unusual. If you weren't one of the lucky folk to touch and feel, you can still see a lot of the items by clicking on the altered book above.
If you'd like to ask any questions about the items or comment please do so by clicking on 'comments' below this post. Then follow the prompts. It's easiest to select 'anonymous' if you're not sure how to sign yourself. Leave your first name at the end of your message and I'll know who you are.

Flying Fingers!

Janet B's workshop this afternoon was very enthusiastically attended by lots of busy hands.
Give a Bookie a piece of paper and a cd and with flying fingers snipping, folding and glueing, under Janet's watchful guidance, and they'll transform it into an intricate little fanned book before you know it. (For a closer look click on the above collage.)

Monday 26 October 2009

Wednesday, 14th October.

A member of the city council came to our meeting to put our aspirations for relocating into his perspective. Thanks to the ability of Margaret D and Nita O'B, who have untold levels of frustration tolerance, I don't think he was totally successful in blighting our enthusiasm.
Show and Tell was consequently very late but welcome light relief! For more photos click on Annette S's merriment above.

Rust Bath Workshop

Today a large group of Fibres Folk met at Barb's for a workshop on rusting a variety of papers, lace and cloth in the rust baths which Barb prepared. A tannic solution, caustic soda solution and iron solution. We all dipped and dripped and lay our bits of paper on the lawn with branches over them to stop them blowing away in the wind - and watched the magic happen. It was a lot of fun and the results were very rewarding.
For more pictures click on the above photo of some of Annette S's finished papers. Thank you for taking photos Annette. Don't we all look so glam in our oldest work clothes?
A huge thank you to Barb for all her hard work and for once again hosting a workshop at her home.

Friends and Neighbours!

Did you know that Kirsten who has just opened Pom Pom Rouge (click to see)

has listed our Fibres and Fabrics blog right at the top of her list of blogs to visit? Now that's a very friendly gesture in the blog world. Thank you Kirsten.

Art Safari!

A group of Fibre Folk took advantage of a tour of the artists of Magnetic Island which was offered last week. It must've been very absorbing because not many photos were taken! Thanks to Annette and Margaret who took those you can see by clicking on the photo of Beryl and Susie relaxing in what appears to be shopping trolleys!!

Thursday 24 September 2009

Fibres Tasmania

Barb N and Pam W have returned from Launceston with lots of inspiring work. They both did 5 day master workshops, Barb with Glenys Mann and Pam with Charlotte Buch: (Denmark). To see some of their pieces click on Fibres Tasmania or go to the members' albums to the right of this post.

If you're interested in learning how to use rust baths to colour paper or cloth, Barb will be demonstrating the art on Friday, 9th October, at the Farm House.

Scrumbling and other Craftinesses

Today at the Wednesday social gathering there was a lot going on - when isn't there? But today perhaps more so than ever.
Dinie led a very successful 'Scrumbling' session which will be continued at the coming Fibres on Saturday gathering. (If you missed the post on scrumbling go back to the post dated Friday, 22nd May 2009 for an explanation.)
Pam was welcomed back from Fibres Tasmania 2009 by a very aristocratic Lah Cat which Susie M made her for her Altered Book display.

Amongst the items passed around at Show and Tell was this beautiful painting by Birte which she says she brought instead of her weekly watercolour because that didn't turn out as well as she'd imagined it would so found a home in the wastepaper basket. (That's me with camera reflected back at you in the glass and you might find me searching through Birte's wastepaper basket for her rejected but certain-to-be perfectly good work!)
After Show and Tell Deb P showed the Bookies group how to make a Christmas tree from a paperback novel. To see more photos please click on the above photo of Deb making stars for the trees.
It seems Barb N and Pam W had a wonderful time at Fibres Tasmania in Launceston and they brought back fabulous work from the workshops they attended. Above is one of Barb's mixed media pieces from her workshop with Glenys Mann. And below is some of Pam's amazing felting.
To see more photos of their work please click on Pam's felting above.

Okay, let's be honest, now. Whose sewing room (studio please - we're all artists!) doesn't look like Annette's, in which it appears she lost her letter?
The theme for this month's postcard is 'I had written him a letter' and it has inspired everyone involved to new heights! To see a few of the postcards please click on Annette's message above.
*
Well that was just some of what was happening at Fibres today. Keep in touch with upcoming events by looking at the diary to your right - and please leave a comment to show you've been here!
