Marlene King.

We are very honoured to have you as a member of Fibres and Fabrics! For our readers can you define yourself – art/craft wise?
I would define myself as a textile artist/quilter. Over the years I have tried many crafts. The main ones of these would be potting and spinning and weaving. I have a Diploma in Hand weaving, from Launceston TAFE. After gaining this I had my studio open to the public for over 10 years, during which time I wove the fabric and made garments up, and these were sold to many overseas countries.

Are you more comfortable working in one particular medium than most others?
My medium is textiles, be it fibre or fabric, either cotton, wool or silk.
Are there any artists or crafters who, more than any others, have influenced you in your creative life and why?We are very honoured to have you as a member of Fibres and Fabrics! For our readers can you define yourself – art/craft wise?
I would define myself as a textile artist/quilter. Over the years I have tried many crafts. The main ones of these would be potting and spinning and weaving.

Are there any artists or crafters who, more than any others, have influenced you in yourcreative life and why?

In my time as a quilter, Gloria Loughman has influenced me more than anyone else. Before I started quilting I had seen Gloria’s work and was entranced by it.
Describe your workspace.
In one word a shambles! My work space is small now, the smallest room in the house, as opposed to a purpose built studio when I was weaving.
What 3 tools could you not live without?
My sewing machine... I get withdrawal symptoms if I spend more than a few days without using it. Also the rotary cutter and scissors. The iron is also an important part of my working life.
Do you keep a sketchbook or journal?
Yes, but I contribute to it and also use it in fits and starts.
We all share our knowledge at Fibres and Fabrics and you have been very generous in this area. Do you extend this in any way by teaching other workshops?
Over the past years I have done many workshops in both QLD and Tas, but now it is only the occasional fun day to help others in their creativity.
How do you inspire your creativity when you’re stuck?
I put the article on the design wall, and go on with something else, and usually an idea comes within a week and I think why didn’t I think of that before!
If cost wasn’t an issue, what avenues would you choose to explore?
I would like to explore textile art further, but place of abode as well as a diminishing memory is a problem.
How do you balance your life?
The balance in my life is heavily unbalanced by the time I spend in the sewing room, but I like to read and also garden.
Your work has appeared in more displays or exhibitions than it’s possible to list. Do you have any work coming up for exhibition in the near future? If so where and when?
I have cut competition work down to a minimum, and this year a lot of time will be spent on a Wedding Quilt for my granddaughter, and also making her bridal gown, but I have an exhibition booked for Oct-Nov 2012 at a local gallery.
What does your work mean to you?
A sense of fulfilment. I like to set myself a challenge, and accomplish it the best I am able.

Our Christmas Party 2010 - it was a "T" Party!!

One of our most esteemed members was honoured for her brazenness at our final gathering for 2010.

On Wednesday 8th December we shared a really good time at our final gathering of the year, our joint Christmas luncheon. Every year a letter of the alphabet is pulled from a hat for the following year's dress-up theme. This year it was "T". The winner is pictured above. For her own protection and to avoid her email box being overloaded with requests for appointments, we will let you guess who she is! To see lots more photos please use this link: T Party and watch the slide show.

(And, by the way, for next Christmas it will be "S" so get your thinking caps on early.)

Embroidery Group Xmas Party

Today we celebrated our Xmas party for the embroidery group at my home. It was lovely and cool inside my home, thank heavens for air conditioning, because it was very warm and humid outside. Here we all at the dinner table before we ate ourselves silly.

Around the table clockwise.

Me (Arlene), Judy S, Sue, Pam, Suzanne C, Barbara, Janet B, Carol, Joan, Sandra, Judy H and Jessica.

We exchanged the traditional Xmas ornament, and discussed our program for next year.

Creative Demo-Day

Yesterday, Friday 12th November, we had lots of fun and laughter at a day of sharing techniques with each other. Janet B brought the day together for us. It was most enjoyable and big success, thank you Janet.

First, Annette showed us how to transfer images printed on normal printer paper with either an inkjet printer or a laser printer using two different mediums: Clear Glaze Medium and Orange Power.
Then Annette wielded her hammer to smash the colour out of unsuspecting foliage and flowers and into cloth to demonstrate India Flint's 'hapazome' technique.

At one point, Marion showed us how to make envelopes out of magazine pages, posters or calendars. I must apologise but I was too engrossed to take any photos. Will make an envelope and insert a photo of it later!

Deb introduced us to sun dyes and she and Janet showed us something of what can be achieved using them. Unfortunately this was a passive demonstration because the sun was being shy on the day.
I'm losing track of the order in which things were done now, but I think it was next that I (Carol) messed around with flour and water to show an easy resist for painting onto cloth.
Marion showed us how she weaves so beautifully on wire frames. We were all itching to try .......
Janet revealed the secrets of foiling using a glue stick and (below) Barb followed up with foiling using Vleisfix.

Barbara ended off the day getting some amazing results distorting Tyvek and florist's paper with the heat of an iron.

What a day! It was sooooo good, Janet. Thank you, again.

News from California Isabel ....

An email from Isabel:

My cousin, a fellow knitter, sent the following website to me, please share it with the knitters in Fibres and Fabrics, it is truly amazing. http://bencuevas.wordpress.com/2010/10/21/transcending-the-material/
Our work week at Lizard was wonderful, exhausting, boring (marine biology is not all romantic I can assure you) and inspiring. I am anxious to get home to California to follow up on some ideas that I have.
But not too soon as we are now in Tasmania for a week. Our first day, yesterday, was fabulous beyond belief. We drove down the Tasman peninsula with lots of birdwatching stops (saw 32 new species) under grey skies (perfect for twitching), spent 6 hours at Port Arthur (very sobering experience), got three more new birds on the drive back and ended the day with a lovely dinner in the port area. The Salamanca market is on the agenda for this morning followed by the miniature railway museum (I'm goofy about miniature trains) and a walk on Mt Wellington. Life is good.
All the best, Isabel

PS Have a look at the website. You won't believe that it's knitting!

Lengths of the Earth

The Creative Group issued a challenge to all "Fiberians" (I like that word, Carol)...ie members of Fibres and Fabrics to join a scavenger hunt.

They are to be finished by the first Wednesday in December, and will be hung in Federation Place.  Here is a teaser to wet your appetites and encourage those thought processes.

Detail of Beryl's

 Detail of Kathy's.

A little bit of Carol's
Details of the Lengths of the Earth Challenge are in this post.

Suzanne's Surprise

In appreciation of the wonderful contribution made by Suzanne in making the North Queensland Show and Tell an amazing success, Kathy presented her with a box of thrinchies ("three inch squares") made by various members.  Click here to see them.

Fibres on Saturday

The Fibres on Saturday group formerly known as SWAT, have issued their members with a challenge.  Each person was given a bag of unspun wool in similar colours with the challenge being to make something.  Megan, Janet W. and Marion spun their wool.

Megan plied hers with black yarn

and Janet is weaving a double-sided beret.

Sand Workshop update

I have updated the post on Isabel's mini workshop here, with instructions for those people who were unable to attend.  Janet B.

Isabel's Workshop on Fabric Sand

Isabel, who has been visiting us from California, gave a workshop on how to make fabric sand.
Thank you Isabel. It has been so good to meet you and get to know you a little. We all at Fibres wish you and Bob all the best in your further travels and hope to see you again when you're back in Townsville.

Those people who attended Ruth Bloomfield's confetti workshop some years ago will recognize similar elements in Isabel's technique.  The pieces are the same "trapezoid" shape but much smaller, only 5mm at most. If your fabric has an obvious wrong side, use fusible webbing to fuse two pieces wrong side together, in this way you don't have to pick through and turn each little piece right side up.  The slivers are scattered across the area with shadows being created by slivers of the opposite colour on the colour wheel.  They are trapped beneath a layer of tulle and then free-motion stitched onto the background.

Janet's Bookmaking Workshop

Janet B recently gave a couple of bookmaking/binding workshops at the Perc Tucker Gallery while our Totems were being exhibited. These are some of the results of work done by Kathy S and Marion G at the workshop and brought to Fibres on Wednesday for show and tell.

Totems - a symbolic representation of a group

Rags, the Dark and Other Distractions!

I must apologise for recently neglecting the blog. There are so many distractions at the moment! Don't forget the NQ Show and Tell on Saturday, from 6 am for working members of Fibres - yes in the dark!  Take a deep breath Suzanne, you're not alone and it's going to be great. And don't forget your pre-election vote - thanks Julia for choosing the 21st when we'd booked it first. Then there are the Totems. Hope yours is coming together more efficiently than mine?! Then Annette gave us a workshop on making rag bags and baskets and distracted me from more pressing matters big time. The two shoulder baskets pictured are mine made since last Friday, that's how distracted I am. Good timing Annette! But thanks. Those of us who attended are enamoured of the technique.

Then, I hope you're working on your Lengths of the Earth pieces..............................?

Joy's Felting Workshop

Over three weekly workshops, Joy introduced us to her felting techniques. An enthusiastic number of members tried their hand at the art with some inspiring results. Thank you Joy!
Here are some of the pieces made. More to follow.

And these are Margaret D's samples relating to the 3rd and 4th lessons in fine work.

Little bo....baskets, little baskets ......

Little baskets here in Townsville,
Little baskets made of twiggy twacky,
Little baskets here in Townsville,
Little baskets none the same.
There's a green one and a red one
And a blue one and a yellow one,
And they're all made out of twiggy twacky
And they none of them the same.
(Apologies to Malvina Reynolds' song Little Boxes)

Nimbin sent us Margaret B for a couple of weeks and Townsville inspired her to make lots of little baskets which she'd learnt to do in Alice Springs at the Beanie Festival. It was lovely getting to know you better Margaret.

Wrapt in Rocky

The Fiberists who made the trip to Wrapt in Rocky were by all accounts wrapt with their experiences! Thank you for the photos Annette.

These images are just a tantalising taste of some of the inspiring results achieved in the workshops.

Doesn't it just make your tongue hang out to join in next time?!
