Sandwich Making

Not what you might think! This giant sandwich contains lots of delicious things, like fried egg, grated carrot, lettuce, beetroot, holey cheese and more between slices of freshly sewn bread. But children can climb right into it as well. Yummy!!

On Friday the Creative Group swung into action at the farmhouse, pooling their creative skills to make the sandwich which is for a future children's exhibition at the Perc Tucker Gallery. It's hoped that the children will channel their instinct to touch and feel into interacting with the sandwich instead of the exhibits.

To see the groups' creativity in action click on the words sandwich making (Blogger won't let me link to a picture anymore, the meanies!).

Thank your the great photos Marion.

Knee Rugs.

Every month the Sewing for Cancer group, led by Jessica, meet at her house to sew turbans and knee rugs for cancer patients. The ladies who give their time some freely to this good cause produce a great many items, not least of which are sewn by Jessica herself and Dianne C.
Dianne is pictured above left with Jessica, showing some of the many knee rugs she has made. Dianne puts a lot of work into making a LOT of knee rugs for both cancer patients and for homes for the elderly.. After having her own father stay in a home she knows the need and how much comfort a nice knee rug gives both the patient and their family. Thank you both and all the other members of Fibres for your great work.

Annual General Meeting

On Wednesday, 10th March 2010, we had a day of meetings upon meetings! Fibres and Fabrics held their well attended AGM first, followed by the normal general meeting and show and tell, followed by a delicious lunch provided by all members, followed by the first meeting of the new committee for the coming year. A full report will come to you in this month's newsletter, so here are a few photos.
Pictured are clockwise from the top left: 1. Janet after receiving her thank-you-for-being-treasurer-roses, President Kathy S and Vice-President Suzanne C. 2. Janet giving her one of her report. 3.The delicious spread. 4.The in-coming committee. Back row L-R: Lyn H, Carol McG, Beryl B, Kathy S, Suzanne C, front row L-R: Suzanne G Annette S and Arlene W. Welcome to the committee AnnetteS and Arlene W and welcome back onto the committee Margaret D (who was away).

There was a big variety of show and tell. Here is a small taste. The seminole patchwork items made by the recent Patchwork Group workshop given by Gai C featured prominantly. The postcards will be added to the postcard album in the Members' Gallery where you can view them.

Beanie for Craft Expo Public Participation

I've been knitting beanies as examples for our public participation beanie knitting project and discovered a few mistakes in the pattern I left at Fibres last meeting. Apologies! You've probably worked things out for yourselves by now, but here's the revised version:

Beanie
Revised Version
Using 8 ply knitting yarn (not wool but something like acrylic which will wash easily) and size 4mm or 5mm needles, cast on 60 stiches (for a child), 70 (for a woman), 80 (for a man). Knit in plain garter stitch for 6 inches (child), 7” (woman), 8” (man).

At this point knitters from Fibres will take over from participants to shape the crown.

To shape the crown in any of the sizes:

1st row: For all sizes **(knit [8] stitches, knit 2 together)**, repeat **(...)** to end of row.
2nd row: knit.

Repeat these two rows reducing the number of knitted stitches [..] between the ‘k 2 tog’ each time: first repeat knit [7], then next repeat [6], next [5],and so on ... [4],[3],[2],[1],[0] until there are. 6 stitches (child size), 7 stitches (woman size) or 8 stitches (man size) remaining.

Now cast off.

Fold in half length wise and sew edges together from crown to cuff.

I suggest we knit a few examples and then knit a few with just the cast on and about 10 rows knitting to get particpants started.

Embroidery – biscornus

Creative – Inchies (that weren’t displayed last year)

Please bring in 5 or 6 of your favourite items that you have made in the last 12 months for selection. Space will determine the number of items shown.

Example:
Janet Banks
Circle of Life
Altered Book Challenge

All items are to be delivered to the Entertainment Centre before 9am on Wednesday 7 April. Please ensure you nominate someone else to be responsible for your work to be delivered and picked up on Sunday 11 April if you are unable to do so.

This year work will be in a mixed display rather than segregated into individual groupings such as Bookies Table. It is hoped that this will encourage the public to wander.

During the four days of the fair please wear your name badge and Fibres scarf – White or Cream tops and dark bottoms always look professional.

On setup day 7 April all helpers are required to wear closed in shoes and a safety vest (some are available at Fibres)

Any questions about the above please talk to Carol McG, Barb N, Janet B or Suzanne C.
