Beanies Delivered

A grand total of 41 beanies were delivered to the Volunteer's desk at the Townsville General Hospital after our Craft Expo Beanie Knitting drive. The beanies were received with great enthusiasm and appreciation.

Thank you very much to all who donated wool, supplied needles and joined us in knitting. We were able to teach a few young people to knit, which was wonderful.

Wednesday 28th April 2010

Shown at the meeting today was this expertly woven table runner made by Janet W.

And, Annette S brought along this very textural piece made from hessian, using the shrinkage technique. It was rusted using vinegar and rusty bits. The black tones were achieved by accident, Annette told us, after she decided to try some tea on the piece. Tannin on rust turns it black, it seems. The piece is called Scrappy Jack RIP in memory of her father who was nicknamed Scrappy Jack. Now we know why Annette walks around with her nose to the ground collecting bits and pieces of trash! Oops, I mean treasures ....

After lunch the Bookies met and, led by Barb N, discussed the creation of content for concertina books. Mary T and Barb had completed house books with which to inspire us. These can be seen underneath the group photo.

Bit small ..... here're bigger versions:

That's better!

ATCs were swapped and pictured below are some of the swaps. A wonderfully diverse collection of techniques and mediums.

Extraordinary Works!

Recently these unusual items were shown at the Wednesday Show and Tell. On the left is some intricate lace work done by Mary. Peter brought along an art piece he had done while at university, worked in fabric, a portrait of a blind man who had sat for him. Peter created the contours using stitch so that the man could feel what he had created. And, in the top right hand corner is the chair in which Glenys skillfully restored the caning of the back rest.

Townsville Craft Expo

Craft Expo has been! There was a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and we all came away with heavier bags but light hearts.

Setting up went very smoothly and quickly, thanks to Suzanne and helpers' prompt transport of props and equipment, Barb's efficient guidance and the many helping hands. Thank you everybody.

There was even lots of time to sit and chat and have smoko!

Below are just a very few of the many pieces of work on the Fibres and Fabrics display.

The raffle went very well, too. Thank you Joan B.
Thank you everyone who came to help man the display, sell raffle tickets, demonstrate the spinning and weaving and assist with the charity knitting.

(Barb I hope that's a look of satisfaction with the whole event!)
